Finding life beneath layers of ice |
Dr. Mahlon Kennicutt, professor of chemical oceanography at Texas A&M, was quoted extensively in an EarthSky podcast. The podcast reported on a Russian team of scientists who drilled through 12,000 feet of ice to reach the surface of Lake Vostok in Antarctica.
Kennicutt, president of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research, commented on the implications of this breakthrough. The interview begins at 7:36.

Kennicutt explains the importance of this research to help understand the limits of life and how life forms can change and evolve to cope with their environment, giving light to how life will react to changes on our planet. He also notes that this kind of drilling could lead to a better understanding of life in extreme environments, including extraterrestrial environments. The EarthSky broadcast network consists of more than 1,200 outlets across the United States and the world and its daily audio programs are heard approximately 4 million times each day in the U.S. alone.
